Charlotte South African Braai 2024 FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why should I attend the braai?
The Charlotte South African Braai is an opportunity to join fellow South Africans from all over the Southeastern U.S. for good food, good music and good times! It is family-friendly, open to everyone, and a great way to get back to our roots in our beautiful country. Come to the braai to make new friends, built new connections and experience a proper South African braai right here in Charlotte!
2. How can I help?
We would be happy to have you volunteer to help out before, during or after the braai to make this event as wonderful and successful as possible! Please email admin@charlottebraai.com if you would like to volunteer.
3. What do I need to bring?
This is a typical South African Bring 'n Braai, so please bring some meat, sides and drinks. There will be sharing tables set up where you can share any food or other items you'd like to share! Camping chairs, picnic blankets, and tents/canopies are welcome and there will be tables in the shelters! We did get an alcohol permit from the county, so beer and wine is allowed, but only in small quantities at the shelters. Alcohol is not allowed in the rest of the park.
The shelters at Park Road Park have very small braai areas, so we'd ask anyone who has a Weber or grill they can bring along, to please do so. Extra charcoal is also welcome.
If you have any food or other items you'd like to share, please place it on the "Share Table". Be careful to not place anything you want to keep on that table.
4. Are pets allowed?
This is a Charlotte Public Park, so regular charlotte park rules apply, so pets are allowed. See Mecklenburg park policies for more information on what is allowed.
5. Where do I donate?
We are not currently accepting donations, please volunteer your time if possible to help organize or set up the shelters. We are trying to keep this as a free event for everyone, so we appreciate any help you can provide in terms of assisting during the braai or cleaning up afterwards. If you'd like to promote your company or products please see question 8 below.
6. Where do I park?
Shelter 1 and 2 are located at the North East entrance of Park rd Park, just off of Closeburn rd. There is a large parking lot next both shelters (next to the volleyball court).
7. Can I bring alcohol?
Yes, we have an alcohol permit for both shelters, allowing small quantities of beer and wine. Please limit consumption to only the shelter areas as alcohol is not allowed in the rest of the park.
8. Can I sell or promote my products or company at the braai?
We don't have any restrictions on promoting your products or company while at the braai, however it is a public park so please follow Mecklenburg Public Park policies of no soliciting etc. We also ask you respect everyone and keep any promotional activities low key. There is a "Share Table" where you are welcome to put any business cards or other items you'd like to give away, just be sure to clean up those items before you leave so our volunteers don't need to do too much work.
Budget Summaries:
Please note: This year we are not doing a fundraiser for the braai, depending on how successful the braai is this year, we will consider doing a fundraiser to host the braai at a larger location.
Budget Summary for 2024 (for transparency):
We will not be renting grills like previous years, however we will be asking people to bring their own webers if they can, as well as some spare charcoal to ensure there is enough braai space for everyone.
